MY TESTIMONY

“ The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

I was a drug addict for 25 years. Whatever I could get my hands on was fair game. Drugs always seemed to be the answer. My life was consumed with one thing: how do I get high?

I was at a crack house trying to get pills but the guy said he didn’t have any. He offered me a line of some powder. I thought it was cocaine. The moment I sniffed it, I knew it wasn’t. It hit me like a sledgehammer to the chest. It was carfentanil, the purest, deadliest form of fentanyl.

I started fading. Fast. I stumbled into the alley behind the house and I could feel my life leaving my body. I started to fall and before I even hit the ground, I was completely transported somewhere else.

I was in complete, and utter darkness. This was a darkness so deep it had a physical weight to it, like a weighted blanket made of fear and anxiety.

I had died before I hit the ground. And I knew, this is it. It’s real. There’s no escaping where I’m heading. I realized: I’m on my way to hell.

I tried to get my bearings. Stumbling, panicking. I don’t know how long I was there. It felt like forever.

Then, behind me, this light appeared. A light so bright it would make the sun look like a shadow.

I heard a voice say, “Are you done yet?”

I turned around. And there He was. Jesus, standing right there. I couldn’t focus on His face because of how bright He was, but I could see His silhouette. And when He spoke to me, it cut right through me in a way I can’t even describe. The Bible says Jesus is the truth, and when truth speaks to you like that, it hits different.

We talked. About my life. About how God had always tried to get ahold of my heart, but I kept turning away. He said to me, “If I let you live, will you live the life that I created you for?” I asked Him, “What did You create me for?” He said, “To tell people about Me. My goodness. My mercy. What I did on the cross of Calvary.” I looked at Him and said, “I don’t know that about You.”

And He said, “Not yet.”

In that moment, He showed me something from 10 years earlier. I was 26 years old. It was a previous time I had taken too much. I was overdosing, foaming at the mouth. I was laying on the cold bathroom floor. I could feel my life leaving my body. I remember hearing a voice whisper in my ear three times: “Not yet. Not yet. Not yet.”

At the time, I had no idea what it meant. But standing there with Jesus, He showed me that it was Him. He whispered in my ear that day. It was always Him.

When I finally answered yes to Him, I was pulled from where I was. My life came back into my body and I opened my eyes.

There was a woman kneeling over me. She had found me in the alley and said I had been purple and blue. I wasn’t breathing and she had been trying to revive me for at least 10 minutes.

She said, “You should be brain dead.”

But when I got up off that ground, I was 100% stone cold sober. The trip was over. The addiction was gone. Everything had changed.

I looked the same on the outside - still skinny, still rough - but on the inside, I was completely different.

The old Jaymen was dead.

The walk home was different. I was seeing everything like it was the first time. The leaves. The flowers. The sky. The grass. Everything had changed.

I didn’t go to rehab. I didn’t do the 12 steps. I had a face-to-face encounter with the living God, and He set me free. Instantly. Completely.

I wouldn’t be a father, I wouldn’t be a husband, I wouldn’t be here if God didn’t do what He did.

Jesus is real. His power is real. And He’s still in the business of setting people free.

If He can save me, He can save you too.
